About the Club
In 1975 an enthusiastic band of rugby supporters got together to form a rugby club in Camden. A third grade team was entered in the Illawarra District Rugby Union competition, part of New South Wales Country Rugby Union. The Club`s first ever team was a mixture of Camden locals keen to try out this new game about which they knew very little, new residents in the district who had a rugby background and students from the University of Sydney`s faculties of Veterinary Science and Agricultural Science who spend their final year at the University`s facilities on Werombi Road, Camden. This first year represented quite a successful start for the Club with the first side making the grand final only to lose to Wollongong University.
In 1976 the Club entered a second grade and third grade side in the Illawarra Rugby Union competition. That year the second grade became the Club`s first premiership winning team when it defeated Campbelltown Harlequins in the grand final. That started the intense rivalry with the Campbelltown Harlequins Club which has continued through to the present day.
In 1977 Camden was called upon to field three grades in the competition and, although at times playing numbers were stretched, with players often asked to play more than one game, the Club still has the distinction of never being forced to forfeit a game in any grade. It wasn`t until the 1980`s that the first grade began to establish itself in the Illawarra competition. The Club`s first grade side made the Illawarra grand finals in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1995 and 1996 with 1987 and 1995 teams proving themselves good enough to emerge as premiers.
In 1985 and 1996 our three senior grades all made the grand finals but coincidentally both times it was only third grade to emerge as the premier team in the Club. In 1996 the Club also had the distinction of winning its first Club championship.
After successfully establishing senior rugby in the district, we turned our attention to juniors starting with a Colt side (Under 19) which made the semi-finals for the first time in 1996 and the Grand Final in 2005 and In more recent years, teams have been fielded from under 8's to under 18's
About fifteen years ago some of the Club members who also had an interest in music got together to tootle a horn and so the Camden Rugby Big Band was born. Over the years the Big Band gre in size and improved in quality and was a regular attraction playing under the trees at the Camden Valley Inn and various other venues around Camden. Unfortunately the Big Band is no longer playing but it certainly was a great addition to the club.
We have come a long way in a relatively short time.

Camden Rugby Song
I’ve got some friends who play rugby
They’re proud to wear the gold and black
The finest men God could ever send
He sent them and he doesn’t want them back
Yes we’re Camden Rugby
And we’ll do our best
Play from your hearts boys
Up and contest
Yes we’re Camden Rugby
And we’ll never give in
Stay in there, fight to win
Extended Version
I’ve got some friends who play rugby
They’re proud to wear the gold and black
The finest men God could ever send
He sent them and he doesn’t want them back
Saturdays were meant for playing rugby
Bugger mowing lawns and fixing taps
From the line we’ll cheer, sip an ice cold beer
What better way to spend the day than that
Chorus
Yes we’re Camden Rugby
And we’ll do our best
Play from your hearts boys
Up and contest
Yes we’re Camden Rugby
And we’ll never give in
Stay in there, fight to win

The Spirit of Camden Rugby
Long, long ago in the earliest days of this great land there came a man of honour, courage and virtue. He traveled the countryside until he came upon a special place, a rich and fertile valley. He knew in his soul that this was to be his home. In the challenging times that he lived he became known for his determination to succeed, his passion for life, his gentleness and honesty, and most of all for his unending faith in mankind. When time came for his passing over, his spirit rose and greeted the Lord. And the Lord said unto him.
"Mike, you have done well my child and your spirit shines."
And Mike said to the Lord; "Thanks Mate."
And the Lord said unto Mike; "You shall remain in spirit and return to your treasured homeland of Camden. In time you will come upon a group of people who gather themselves in the name of Camden Rugby. Their symbol is a sheep, and you shall be their shepherd."
And Mike said unto the Lord; "Strewth!"
And the Lord continued unto Mike; "These are special people and they need guidance. You shall show them the way of faith in themselves and faith in those around them. You shall show them the way of compassion and understanding. And most importantly you shall show them the way of unity."
And Mike said to the Lord; "Fair dinkum! D'ya reckon I'm worthy?"
And then the sound of a thousand angels filled Mike with the final words of the Lord; "Guide your flock well my child. All the powers of heaven and earth will be with you, and you will succeed. After all, it's for Camden Rugby - it's important."
And so it was that Mike Merino became our guardian angel, the Patron Saint of Camden Rugby, and we became his flock. He is with us always.
