Bulls Wear Down Tenacious Blueys

MatchReportReigning Premiers of the IDRU Builders Club Premiership, the University Bulls, had to fight all the way to the bell to overcome a tenacious Vikings outfit in their round two clash at University Oval on Saturday.

The powerful University forward pack took control early driving play deep into the Vikings end of the field and took up residence as they pounded the Blueys line for the opening eight minutes. Eventually after sustained pressure on the Blueys line by the bigger Uni forwards the opening try came when lock Will Wood finished some clever play by flanker Jason Hughes to post first points. Five minutes later halfback Chris Miller raced away to cross the Blueys line only to called back for a knock-on in the lead up play as Uni’s power game started to look like they were going to go on with the job. But Vikings just would not go away.

On the back of a string of penalties Vikings were able to claw back some field position and put plenty of pressure on their more fancied opponents. Exciting young halfback Jason Reid almost scored the Blueys first when he pounced on a Uni fumble, toeing the ball into the in goal only to be just outsprinted to the ball. Two minutes later centre Beau Midgley was similarly unlucky not to score when he chipped kicked into the in goal as well. A high tackle penalty at the twenty eighth minute mark saw Reid kick Vikings first points to bring the score to 3-5 in favour of Uni.
