Cracker start to season 2010
After a successful season 2009, Camden was hoping to build on that success in 2010. First grade coaches Al LeGood and Andrew Suffell, Reserves coach Michael Solomons and new Third Grade coach Matt Searle were bound to be happy with the first encounter of the season.
For a season opener, Camden Rams came out all guns blazing against a weakened yet committed rival in Bowral and Bundanoon.
In Third Grade, Camden took on Bundanoon and after some good lead-up work out-paced the Bundanoon backs to take first points with a try out wide to fullback Mark Strong. Camden’s defence held strong and although missing some key opportunities in attack, they managed to keep their line intact. Further tries to Centres Tim Whyte and Nick Daley sealed a 19-0 victory. Best on ground was shared by forwards Dan Cambell, David Kay-Spratley and winger Matt Tagg.
Second grade capitalised on a depleted Bowral outfit and came away with a convincing 53-0 bonus point victory. Tries were score by John Nettle, Wade Chandler (2), Matt Wakeford, Josh Jensen, Michael Burke, Warren Green, Daniel Grimson and best on park No 8 James Crisp who skittled many defenders throughout the game. Fly half Alex Ban and prop Tom Howe were instrumental in setting up the win.
The new-look first grade outfit were hoping to continue with momentum set up by the lower grades and stepped it up a gear from the opening kick-off scoring a length of the field try within 30 seconds. The backs continued to run rampant and tries to Skipper Andy Vernon (2), Glen Whitney, Ethan Whittington (3), Jake Sadler, Josh Tailby, Willy Ahsam, Tyler Aitken (2) and Mark Morris continued to hike up the impressive 70-0 scoreline. This completed a clean sweep of three grades for the first time in 3 seasons and all coaches commented on how important it was to keep sides to nil.
The best on ground in the top grade was shared between fly half Josh Tailby, Willy Ahsam and fullback Jake Sadler. Camden however made it clear that they are under no illusions how tough this season will be and will be expecting a far tougher clash against Wollondilly in a fortnights time.
