NSWJRU MEDIA RELEASE

Thousands in action at NSW State Champs over June long weekend

More than 2560 Junior Club rugby players from all 4 corners of NSW plus ACT and Victoria will compete in the NSWJRU State Championships over the June long weekend. The Championships is the biggest carnival in the country with preliminary rounds held across 7 venues in Sydney, Camden and Orange, culminating in the Under 11 to 17’s Finals at Eastwood’s T.G. Millner Field on Monday 14 June.

2010 will see a record number of 112 team entries. Paul Taylor, NSWJRU President was especially pleased with increased team entries in the older age groups. “We have 37 teams in the 15’s, 16’s and 17’s participating at this year’s State Championships. This is an incredible turnout and reflects the
important role played by the NSWJRU Representative Pathway in attracting and retaining talented rugby players to our code. A lot of effort has gone in over the years to improve the attractiveness and quality of the Rep Program for Junior Club players and we are all delighted to see the benefits flow through in 2010. It’s all about providing equal selection opportunities for Junior Club players to further their aspirations. The level of participation this year augers well for the competitiveness of the carnival and the standard of rugby that will inevitably flow through to both the NSWJRU State 15’s and 17’s teams, who will play against Queensland in October, and the SJRU and CJRU 16’s, which will compete at the U16’s Nationals later in the year. ”

The importance of this carnival is reflected by the presence of the ARU and NSWRU Presidents who will be presenting the trophies at the finals. Kerry Brady, NSWJRU Rep Rugby Manager said “ we are thrilled this year to receive very strong support from the whole rugby community, including the appearance of Robbie Deans and the 2010 Wallaby squad at the finals as well as ARU and NSWRU Board members. Tah Man will also be on hand to lend his support to the youngest age group, who are competing in the Under 10s Development Carnival at Narrabeen. The Championships continues to get bigger and better every year and is a credit to the strong support provided by Committees of SJRU and CJRU and the hundreds of parents and volunteers who make it happen.”

The hallmarks of the Championships involve junior club players proudly wearing their representative jersey, enjoying the game and contest, where mateship not only extends to teammates but opponents as well. The traditions and values of our game are very much evident at the NSWJRU State Championships where the whole rugby community comes together to support their junior code.

Everyone connected or interested in junior rugby is welcome to attend.
