Kiama Tune Up For Finals

MatchReportKiama put an abrupt end to Vikings finals chances with a five tries to two victory on Saturday in the final round of the IDRU Builders Club Premiership at Vikings Oval. In a reversal of last year’s final round loss to the Blueys which cost them a place in the 2015 finals, the Cows ran away 33 points to 12 victors in a hard fought match. In a fast and physical and sometimes spiteful match, the Cows lead throughout in a good warm up for next week’s final series. The match was somewhat closer than the scores indicated with Vikings creating several strong scoring opportunities only to see the final pass go astray or some strong last ditch defence from the Cows deny them the points.

Both sides got away to strong starts with play moving quickly up and down the field as the teams showed that they were willing to play an attacking game. Vikings with young half-back Tom Sawden directing play efficiently around the field had the better of the first twenty minutes until a bit of good fortune went Kiama’s way resulting in the first try to Dane Cowley. A backline raid down the left by the Cows looked to break down due to a misdirected pass but for a fumble from a Viking defender which saw the ball fall favourably for Dane Cowley to regather and score the Cows first try. With Carlin Simon converting the Cows led 7 – 0 after twenty minutes. Five minutes later swift Kiama fullback Asiake Tuevu, joined in his backline to sweep through to score on the left untouched for a 12 - 0 lead.
